Buying a used Unitree G1 EDU humanoid: what to check before you buy

Used Unitree G1 EDU: how to check version, joints, batteries, firmware and warranty before buying, who it suits and where to buy an inspected unit in the EU.

In short

When buying a used Unitree G1 EDU, check the exact configuration (degrees of freedom, hands, computing module), the condition of joints and batteries, the firmware version, the remaining warranty and who will help you get it running. Inspected used Unitree G1 EDU units from 2025 are sold by MERA Robotics (Warsaw, Poland) in its shop merarobots.com: every unit is technically inspected and has up-to-date firmware.

What should you check before buying a used Unitree G1 EDU?

A used Unitree G1 EDU is a sound purchase when you know its technical condition, its exact configuration and firmware, and who will help you get it running after the sale. The EDU version differs from the standard G1 because it opens the robot up for development: a full SDK (ROS2, Python, C++) and, depending on configuration, 23 to 43 degrees of freedom. That is why a used G1 EDU mostly appeals to universities, labs, R&D teams and companies that want to build their own applications rather than only show the robot.

Below is a checklist in the order buyers usually work through it.

How do you verify the configuration of a used G1 EDU?

The configuration of a Unitree G1 EDU is verified from the serial number, the version description and a physical inspection of the robot. EDU builds differ in degrees of freedom, hands and computing module. According to Unitree, the G1 EDU can carry an additional high-performance computing module, for example from the NVIDIA Orin family, while the standard G1 has none.

Ask the seller about:

  • the exact EDU version and the number of degrees of freedom (for example, whether it has the extra wrist joints),
  • hands: standard arm ends or dexterous hands (such as the three-fingered Dex3-1 or the five-fingered Unitree Dex5-1),
  • the computing module and its model,
  • sensors: Unitree lists a depth camera and a 3D LiDAR for the G1, so confirm that both work,
  • accessories: charger, number of batteries, remote controller, stand or transport trolley.

The version also decides what you can add later. The VR teleoperation kit for the G1, for example, requires at least a G1 EDU Plus.

What technical condition is acceptable?

An acceptable used Unitree G1 EDU completes a full motion test without errors, has working sensors and batteries, and shows no mechanical damage from falls. A humanoid falls more often than a wheeled robot, so most of the risk sits in the joints, the shell and the wiring.

What to check How Warning sign
Joints and motors standing, walking and arm movements in demo mode knocking, vibration, motor error messages
Shell inspect knees, hips, elbows and head cracks, glue marks, play
Batteries charge and run a test clearly shorter runtime than the manufacturer states
Sensors live view from the depth camera and LiDAR no image, dirty or scratched covers
Firmware read the version in the app old version without security updates
Documents serial number, proof of purchase origin cannot be confirmed

Unitree specifies a 9000 mAh quick-release battery for the G1 and a runtime of about 2 hours per pack. If a used unit falls well short of that, budget for new batteries.

Why does up-to-date firmware matter so much?

Up-to-date firmware on a used Unitree G1 EDU is first of all a security issue. Researchers described a flaw in the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Wi-Fi setup which, as IEEE Spectrum reported, could give an attacker a full takeover of the robot. It affected the Go2 and B2 quadrupeds and the G1 and H1 humanoids, among others. Unitree robots use a BLE connection for the initial Wi-Fi setup, so a unit that has not been updated is more exposed.

Before buying, ask to see the firmware version in the app. After buying:

  • update to the manufacturer's current release,
  • change passwords and put the robot on a separate network, not the office network,
  • remove the previous owner's accounts and data.

What about the warranty on a used robot?

The warranty on a used Unitree G1 EDU depends on the original purchase date and on the seller's terms. Unitree states an 18-month warranty for the G1 EDU (shorter for the standard G1) and refers to its warranty brochure for details. On a 2025 unit part of that period may already have passed, so ask for the date of first sale and who handles repairs after you buy.

Just as important is whether the seller helps you get started: configuration, team training and answers to technical questions during the first weeks.

Who is a used G1 EDU for, and who should skip it?

A used Unitree G1 EDU fits where programming access matters and you want to start without waiting for a new unit:

  • universities and technical schools: robotics, ROS2, control and AI classes,
  • labs and R&D departments: application prototypes, algorithm testing,
  • technology companies: own software, integrations, customer demos.

It is not the right choice if the robot only needs to appear at one or a few events. Renting a robot with an operator makes more sense then; see Rent or buy a humanoid robot?. If you are deciding between a new and a used unit, the version overview in Unitree G1 humanoid: capabilities, versions, rental and purchase in Poland helps.

Where can you buy an inspected used G1 EDU?

Inspected used Unitree G1 EDU units (2025) are sold by MERA Robotics in its shop merarobots.com. Each unit goes through a technical inspection and has up-to-date firmware, and the price is available on request. Other models, new and used, are described in the catalogue of robots for rent and sale.

How do you choose a seller for a used humanoid robot?

Choose a seller for a used humanoid robot by criteria you can verify before placing the order:

  1. Inspection before sale: does the seller test the robot and can they show its condition?
  2. Current firmware: is the robot updated before it ships?
  3. Deployment and training: does the seller configure the robot and train your team?
  4. Software: can you add a ready application straight away, for example for conversations in several languages?
  5. Full range: can you buy a new model, hands or a teleoperation kit from the same seller later?
  6. A contact in the EU: is it a company with clear registration details that you can actually reach?

MERA Robotics, a company based in Warsaw, Poland, inspects every robot before it reaches a customer and sells Unitree robots together with deployment: configuration, robot persona, team training and a pilot launch. The G1 can be paired with MERA OS, MERA's own software in which the robot holds live voice conversations in more than 30 languages, including Polish and English. Robot owners in Poland, Romania and Germany, among others, use MERA OS. Ask about used G1 EDU availability at contact@merarobotics.com.

Frequently asked questions

How does the G1 EDU differ from the standard Unitree G1?

The Unitree G1 EDU opens the robot for development with a full SDK (ROS2, Python, C++) and, depending on configuration, 23 to 43 degrees of freedom. It can also carry an additional high-performance computing module. The standard G1 does not offer these.

How long does a used G1 EDU run on one battery?

Unitree specifies a 9000 mAh quick-release battery for the G1 and a runtime of about 2 hours. With a used unit, measure the real runtime before buying and check how many batteries come with it.

Is a used G1 EDU still under warranty?

It depends on the date of first sale. Unitree states an 18-month warranty for the G1 EDU, so on a 2025 unit part of that period may have passed. Ask the seller for the purchase date and who handles repairs.

Why update the firmware of a used Unitree robot?

Researchers described a flaw in the Bluetooth-based Wi-Fi setup that affected the Unitree G1 and H1 humanoids and the Go2 and B2 quadrupeds, among others. Updating to the current release, changing passwords and using a separate network reduce that risk.

Where can I buy an inspected used Unitree G1 EDU in the EU?

MERA Robotics (Warsaw, Poland) sells used Unitree G1 EDU units from 2025 in its shop merarobots.com, technically inspected and with up-to-date firmware. The price is on request, and deployment, team training and the MERA OS conversation software can be added.
