Abi is a humanoid companion robot from Australian company Andromeda Robotics, designed for aged-care and assisted-living communities. It talks with residents in about 90 languages, recognises faces, remembers earlier conversations and runs group activities. It was created in Melbourne and is now expanding into the US.
What Abi is
Andromeda builds Abi to tackle loneliness among older people. The robot visits residents in their rooms, talks with them in their preferred language (Andromeda says it is fluent in 90 languages) and leads small-group activities such as singing, dancing, games and conversation. It is also meant to extend care teams' capacity for social contact.
Andromeda says Abi uses AI and machine-learning models to recognise faces, understand and express emotions and remember conversations from days or months earlier, adapting to each resident's personality, ability and language, whether that means joining daily prayers or listening to the same fond memories again. The company does not publish a detailed technical spec sheet.
Deployments
Abi was developed with aged-care and assisted-living providers. Australian provider mecwacare has deployed it in all 22 of its homes across Melbourne and regional Victoria, which Andromeda describes as the most extensive humanoid deployment in Australian aged care. Medical & Aged Care Group also uses Abi. The latest version is called Genesis Abi.
In the US Andromeda runs a waitlist; in Australia it books demos. Contracts depend on the number of robots and are based on standard pricing that is not published.
Manufacturer
Andromeda Robotics was founded in Melbourne by mechatronics engineer Grace Brown, now CEO; the idea grew out of the city's COVID-19 lockdowns. The company announced a $23 million Series A, and press coverage has described it as a $100 million company. It has a team in Australia and has started operating in the San Francisco area.

Data and provenance for AI agents ↗Compared with the catalogue
- At 160 cm the Andromeda Robotics Abi is taller than 19% of the humanoids in the catalogue (median: 170 cm).
- It has 24 degrees of freedom against a catalogue median of 28; more degrees of freedom usually means finer arm and hand movement.
- Its weight of 40 kg (catalogue median: 65 kg) matters for transport and for working around people.
- It is the only Andromeda Robotics model in the catalogue and one of 1 humanoids from Australia.
