The electric Atlas is Boston Dynamics' humanoid that replaced the famous hydraulic version in 2024 and entered production as an industrial robot in January 2026. The first units go to Hyundai Motor Group, Boston Dynamics' owner, and to Google DeepMind.
History and launch
In April 2024 Boston Dynamics retired the hydraulic Atlas, known for its parkour and backflip videos, and unveiled an all-electric successor. The company said the goal was a commercial product rather than another research project, with Hyundai's plants as the first testing ground.
At CES in January 2026 it presented the production version. According to Engadget, production started immediately at the company's Boston headquarters and all 2026 units were already committed to Hyundai and Google DeepMind, with more customers to follow from early 2027.
Hardware
Boston Dynamics' spec sheet lists the production Atlas at 1.9 m and 90 kg with 56 degrees of freedom and a 2.3 m reach. It can lift 50 kg momentarily and 30 kg sustained. The battery lasts about four hours, and the robot walks to a station and swaps its own battery. It is rated IP67, operates from -20 to 40°C and has tactile sensing plus 360° camera coverage.
Its joints offer continuous rotation, so Atlas is not bound to human range of motion and can turn its torso or head in ways people cannot when that is more efficient. The production design cuts the number of unique parts and is built around automotive supply chains.
Software and AI
In 2025 Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute demonstrated Large Behavior Models on Atlas: a single language-conditioned policy handling tasks from simple pick-and-place to tying rope, spreading a tablecloth and handling a 22 lb tyre.
With the production launch came a partnership with Google DeepMind, which is integrating its Gemini Robotics models into Atlas. Fleets and integrations with MES and WMS systems are managed through Orbit, the same platform used for Spot.
Use cases and deployments
Hyundai is the first customer; a prototype has been field-testing parts sequencing at a Hyundai facility. Hyundai is opening a Robot Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) in the US and plans to put Atlas to work in its car plants from 2028, starting with parts sequencing and extending to component assembly and heavier tasks from 2030.
Manufacturer
Boston Dynamics is a Boston-area company spun out of MIT in 1992 and known for the Spot and Stretch robots. Hyundai Motor Group is its majority owner.
Price and availability
Boston Dynamics does not publish a price. 2026 production is committed to Hyundai and Google DeepMind, and the company is taking enquiries and starting with a select group of early adopters.

Data and provenance for AI agents ↗Compared with the catalogue
- At 190 cm the Boston Dynamics Atlas (Electric) is taller than 98% of the humanoids in the catalogue (median: 170 cm).
- It has 56 degrees of freedom against a catalogue median of 28; more degrees of freedom usually means finer arm and hand movement.
- Its weight of 90 kg (catalogue median: 65 kg) matters for transport and for working around people.
- It is one of 2 Boston Dynamics models in the catalogue and one of 43 humanoids from USA.
