Origin is the first robot from HIRO Industries, a young company in Corvallis, Oregon. It is a stationary dual-arm robot meant to stand at an ordinary, human-designed workstation and handle packing, kitting and light assembly.
Design and hardware
Origin has no legs and no mobile base. Two seven-joint arms are mounted on a fixed stand with a lifting column, and each ends in a compliant parallel gripper with flexible fingers, kept deliberately simple.
HIRO lists 17 degrees of freedom: 14 in the arms, 2 in the grippers and 1 in the lift. Three RGB-D cameras, one in the head and one on each wrist, provide 1280 × 800 color at up to 60 fps and 1280 × 800 depth at up to 30 fps.
Height, weight, payload and runtime have not been published.
Applications and deployments
The company names packing, kitting and light assembly as starting tasks, with the idea that the robot can take over an existing station without rebuilding the line. HIRO is currently looking for design partners and has not announced commercial deployments.
