Syntro is a US-made humanoid from WorkFar: a dual-arm torso with dexterous hands on a three-wheel omnidirectional base. It is sold in three packages (Base, Telepresence, Intelligent) for warehouse, factory and cleanroom automation and for remote work in hazardous areas.
Hardware
WorkFar's spec sheet lists Syntro at 1.7 m tall, 0.64 m wide and 108 kg, with a 20 kg payload. It has 45 degrees of freedom: 2 in the head, 4 per arm, 3 per wrist, 12 per hand, 2 in the waist and 3 in its omni-wheel base. It has no legs.
Drives use Maxon motors and Harmonic Drive gears. Sensing includes a 2D lidar, cameras and microphones; an Intel Core i5 computer runs Linux with ROS2, and connectivity is Wi-Fi 6 and 5G LTE. Swappable 1.2 kWh batteries give 6-10 hours of run time with a similar charge time. Materials include aluminium, stainless and carbon steel, brass, acetal and carbon-fibre filament.
Software and variants
Base is the robot with an SDK for learning, development and custom programming. Telepresence adds live teleoperation and shared autonomy with a VR headset, gloves, suit and pedals for the operator, aimed at hazardous areas, cleanrooms and collecting AI training data. Intelligent is a licence for WorkFar's AI software with fleet management and IoT integration.
The company has described a collaboration with Italy's Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia to adapt the iCub robot's avatar architecture to a commercial, human-controlled wheeled robot, and it appointed David Hanson, creator of the Sophia robot, as an adviser.
Manufacturer
WorkFar Inc. gives a mailing address in Dover, Delaware and lists several US facilities, with Syntro built at Advantage Plastics in Louisville, Kentucky. Besides robots it offers automation integration, CNC machining, plastic injection and contract manufacturing. The company says it has taken no venture capital and grows by acquiring existing manufacturers. It has not published delivery numbers.
Price and availability
WorkFar's online store lists Syntro from $9,999.99 (Base robot only) to $59,999.99 (robot with Telepresence and Intelligent packages). Financing, installation and training are offered.
