Calvin-40 is a biped industrial humanoid from Wandercraft, the French maker of self-balancing medical exoskeletons. It is built to move crates, parcels, tires, panels and other heavy loads in factories and warehouses, with first series deliveries expected in the first half of 2027.

History and launch

Wandercraft has spent more than a decade building self-balancing exoskeletons that let wheelchair users walk (Atalante X for rehabilitation, Eve for the home), and it built its industrial robot on that technology.

In June 2025 Renault Group closed a minority investment in Wandercraft and signed an agreement to develop the Calvin family of robots, first for its own plants; Renault is also meant to help industrialize and cut the cost of producing robots and exoskeletons. Calvin-40 was revealed publicly around the same time.

Design and hardware

Calvin-40 walks on two legs because, as CEO Matthieu Masselin puts it, factories and warehouses are built for legs: stairs, thresholds, uneven floors and tight aisles. It deliberately has no head, which added cost without improving perception and could make workers uneasy; its camera, first placed at lower abdomen level, now sits between the shoulders.

Wandercraft highlights high-torque motors, a high-strength structure and whole-body control that adapts to the load, a 3D sensor with an AI vision stack, autonomous navigation and a certifiable safety system for working alongside people without barriers. The target failure rate is below 1 in 1,000. Dimensions, weight and payload have not been published.

Software and AI

Wandercraft develops the robot around defined task clusters: it first achieves reliability in one application, then uses deployment data to widen its skills, keeping the operational data and roadmap in-house rather than tied to a single technology supplier. Picking and sorting, which need finer manipulation, are being developed next.

Applications and deployments

Calvin-40 handles boxes, crates, parcels, tires, panels and carts and moves material between workstations. It works at Renault plants; in November 2025 Wandercraft signed a deployment partnership with Italian Tier 1 supplier SAPA, and in September 2026 it announced 12 customers across automotive, logistics, retail, healthcare and defense, without naming all of them. Wandercraft claims repetitive workflows become up to three times more cost-efficient.

Manufacturer

Wandercraft is a Paris-based company led by co-founder and CEO Matthieu Masselin, with operations in New York. In October 2026 it acquired US exoskeleton maker Ekso Bionics (EksoNR, Indego).
