NEO Gamma is a home humanoid prototype from 1X Technologies, a company with roots in Norway and headquarters in California, unveiled in February 2025 as the successor to NEO Beta. It led to the consumer NEO Home Robot, which went on preorder in October 2025 at $20,000 with first customer deliveries planned for 2026.
History and launch
1X introduced NEO Gamma on 21 February 2025 as the version that would start internal testing in real homes. CEO Bernt Børnich argued that home robots have to learn alongside people rather than in a lab. 1X itself described the AI upgrades as improving both autonomy and safe teleoperation in the home, so the robot was not yet fully autonomous.
On 28 October 2025 1X opened preorders for the consumer version, simply called NEO (NEO Home Robot). The company says its first-year production of 10,000 units was booked within five days.
Hardware
Gamma brought a home-oriented look: a knitted nylon suit to soften contact with people and glowing "ear rings" that show the robot's status. The body is moved by 1X's tendon drive, which the company says gives soft, quiet and low-energy motion.
The consumer NEO spec sheet lists 5 ft 6 in (about 168 cm), 66 lb (about 30 kg), a 154 lb lift and a 55 lb carry. Each hand has 22 degrees of freedom, each arm 7, each leg 6, the neck 3 and the spine 2. An 842 Wh battery gives about 4 hours, walking speed is 1.4 m/s, rated noise is 22 dB and the onboard computer is based on NVIDIA Jetson Thor.
Internal parts are wrapped in a soft 3D polymer lattice, joints are covered to prevent pinching, and the suit and shoes are machine washable.
Software and AI
Gamma introduced a whole-body controller trained with reinforcement learning on motion-capture data, so the robot walks with a natural gait and arm swing, squats to pick things up and sits on chairs. For manipulation 1X trained a visual model that can grasp objects not seen in training.
The consumer NEO uses Redwood AI to learn and repeat chores and a built-in language model for conversation. For chores it cannot do yet, owners can book "Expert Mode", in which a 1X operator guides the robot remotely while it collects training data.
Use cases and deployments
NEO targets household work such as tidying, laundry, fetching things and opening doors, plus conversation and reminders. In March 2025 1X and NVIDIA's GEAR Lab spent a week teaching NEO Gamma to do dishes in employees' homes. In April 2026 1X started full production at its Hayward, California factory; early units go to internal testing and research, and the company has promised first customer shipments in 2026.
Manufacturer
1X Technologies was founded in Norway in 2014 by Bernt Børnich as Halodi Robotics. It is headquartered in Palo Alto with manufacturing in Hayward and in Moss, Norway. Its 2023 Series A was led by OpenAI and Tiger Global, and in January 2024 it raised $100 million in a Series B led by EQT Ventures. Before NEO, 1X built the wheeled EVE robot for commercial sites.
Price and availability
NEO Gamma itself was a prototype and was never sold. The consumer NEO costs $20,000 under Early Access or about $500 a month on subscription, with a $200 deposit. US deliveries come first.

Data and provenance for AI agents ↗Compared with the catalogue
- At 167 cm the 1X Technologies NEO Gamma is taller than 38% of the humanoids in the catalogue (median: 170 cm).
- It has 22 degrees of freedom against a catalogue median of 28; more degrees of freedom usually means finer arm and hand movement.
- Its weight of 30 kg (catalogue median: 65 kg) matters for transport and for working around people.
- It is one of 3 1X Technologies models in the catalogue and one of 2 humanoids from Norway.
