DOBOT ATOM is the first full-size humanoid from DOBOT, best known for cobots and Magician educational robots. It is aimed at repetitive industrial and service tasks such as feeding parts on assembly lines, making coffee or night-time pharmacy dispensing. The ATOM family also includes a research version (ATOM Max) and a data-collection version (ATOM D).
Design and hardware
According to DOBOT's product page, ATOM's upper body has 28 degrees of freedom controlled by the Neuro-Driven Dexterity System (NDS), a Transformer-based architecture fed by binocular RGB vision. Control runs at 200 Hz with servo-level vibration suppression for smooth tool use, assembly and handling of objects of different sizes.
Its straight-knee Anthropomorphic Walking System mimics human biomechanics, and DOBOT says it uses 42% less energy than conventional bent-knee walking. The robot is designed for workstation heights of 700-1000 mm and narrow aisles. DOBOT's page does not give height or weight.
ATOM Max, for researchers, has 41 DoF, 6-DoF hands, a 60 fps Full HD camera, an Intel RealSense D455 depth camera and a 1500 TOPS AI module. ATOM D, built for large-scale data collection, has two 7-DoF arms, a 2-DoF head and interchangeable end effectors.
Software and AI
Task planning is handled by Robot Operator Model-1 (ROM-1), which combines a base model with industry-specific models. It has 100 million parameters, runs end-to-end control at 24 Hz, was trained with imitation and reinforcement learning, and breaks complex tasks into steps on its own. ATOM Max offers an optional embodied AI kit (URDF models, an open-source training framework and data tools) and markerless VR/MR teleoperation in full-body or segmented modes.
Applications
DOBOT shows ATOM handling material on automotive assembly lines, preparing drinks in coffee shops and dispensing medicine overnight in pharmacies, as well as working with other robots and people. It says the robot's edge computer offers 7.7 times the industry-standard compute. No customers are named.
