MATRIX-3

In development

MATRIX-3 is the third-generation bipedal humanoid from Shanghai-based Matrix Robotics, led by the former head of Tesla's China design centre. It is 1.7 m tall, weighs 65 kg, has 27-DOF hands and tactile skin over the whole body, and is aimed at commercial service work such as making coffee and greeting guests, plus light retail and logistics tasks.

History and launch

Matrix Robotics launched MATRIX-3 alongside the opening of its own MFH factory in Shanghai's Zhangjiang district. In late May 2026 the robot was the company's centrepiece at BEYOND Expo in Macao, where visitors played rock-paper-scissors against it and the Macao Chief Executive visited the stand.

At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai (July 17-20, 2026) the company ran four identical units in four live demo zones, announced an upgrade to its WAVE model, presented a Robotics-as-a-Service plan and launched a global partner programme for regional distributors.

Hardware

MATRIX-3 stands 1.70 m and weighs 65 kg. Its legs use in-house biomimetic linear actuators, and at trade shows it walked at up to 3.9 km/h. Each hand has 27 DOF with a tendon-style cable drive, and fingertip sensing resolves down to 0.1 N.

A 3D-woven skin with distributed touch sensors covers the body to make contact with people safer. The robot runs for about 4 hours continuously and, per the company, carries up to 15 kg with both arms.

Software and AI

Control is built on Matrix's WAVE model, which it calls a physical-world foundation model. It uses a brain-cerebellum split: WAVE handles scene understanding, reasoning and task planning, while a separate motion model produces smooth whole-body movement. It is trained on real and simulated interaction data, and the company claims zero-shot generalisation to new tasks.

Matrix Robotics says it develops nine layers of the stack in-house, from data tools and model training to core components and final assembly.

Deployments

At WAIC 2026 MATRIX-3 ran a coffee machine as an autonomous barista, chatted with visitors, handed out fruit and bottled water, and walked the floor stopping to introduce the company. Pilots are under way in restaurant chains, hotels, research and tourism venues.

The CEO says cumulative orders are close to 1,000, with coffee chains and hotels among buyers, while AP reported in mid-2026 that only a few hundred units had been built so far.

Manufacturer

Matrix Robotics is based in Shanghai. Founder and CEO Zhang Haixing (Allen Zhang) previously led Tesla's China design and R&D centre. The Zhangjiang MFH plant has planned 2026 capacity of 5,000 units and a 2027 target of 10,000 (a May press release even cited 100,000).

Price and availability

Gasgoo reports prices from 580,000 yuan, while AP cites about $99,000 per unit. Sales are mainly in China; abroad the company is recruiting regional partners through its MATRIX Global Partner Program and also offers robots as a service.
