MagicBot Z1 is a compact bipedal humanoid from MagicLab of Wuxi, China, launched in July 2025. It stands about 137 cm tall, weighs about 40 kg and has 24 degrees of freedom (up to 50 in the developer version). MagicLab targets research and education, commercial services, entertainment and home companionship.
History and launch
MagicLab announced the MagicBot Z1 on 8 July 2025. It had earlier developed the full-size MagicBot (Gen1), shown training on factory lines in December 2024. The Z1 is smaller and built for dynamic motion such as getting up after falls, recovering from impacts and backbends.
It comes in two editions: a Standard Edition with basic motion capabilities for enthusiasts, and a Developer Edition that can add hands, a compute module and extra wrist joints.
Design and hardware
MagicLab's specification lists 1369 x 422 x 200 mm standing and 730 x 422 x 395 mm folded, and about 40 kg with battery. It has 24 DoF: 6 per leg, 5 per arm, 1 in the head and 1 in the waist. The Developer Edition can be expanded to 50 DoF, including two extra wrist joints and 11-DoF tactile hands.
Actuation uses MagicLab's own modules with synchronous motors controlled at 25 kHz and dual encoders. Maximum knee torque is 100 Nm (130 Nm on the developer version), joints rotate up to 320 degrees, and the bearings withstand 8.7 kN impacts. Arm payload is 2 kg (3 kg developer). The aluminium and engineering-plastic structure has, according to MagicLab, been through tens of thousands of fall tests.
Sensors include 3D LiDAR, a depth camera, binocular fisheye cameras, a head touch sensor, a microphone array and a 5 W speaker. A quick-release 10,000 mAh 15-cell battery gives about 2 hours of operation. Compute is an 8-core CPU, with an optional high-performance module.
Software and AI
The Z1 learns walking and whole-body motion through imitation and reinforcement learning; MagicLab says a new motion sequence can be learned in about 20 minutes using its motion database. VLN algorithms handle navigation and obstacle avoidance, and a multimodal VLM handles conversation. Touching its head triggers voice and gesture responses. The developer version offers open APIs, an SDK and OTA updates.
Manufacturer
MagicLab (Magiclab Robotics Technology (Wuxi)) was founded in January 2024 within the Dreame Technology ecosystem and is led by Wu Changzheng. The company says its founding team helped build Xiaomi's first quadruped. In December 2024 it raised RMB 150 million in an angel round led by Zhuichuang Venture Capital. By 2026 it had over 300 staff and was a robot partner of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. It also makes MagicDog quadrupeds, dexterous hands and joint modules.
Price and availability
The Z1 is sold through MagicLab's channels, but no price is listed on its website.
